Clinical Supervision for Psychologists & Counsellors
You spend your days holding other people’s hardest moments. Your board or association expects you to have somewhere to take that, and so do your clients. Lerni gives you regular, confidential supervision with an experienced practitioner who isn’t your manager, your colleague down the hall or a friend.
What is clinical supervision for psychologists and counsellors?
It’s a regular, structured conversation with an experienced practitioner about your client work: your cases, your decisions, your reactions and the limits of your competence. Some call it clinical supervision, some professional supervision, and psychologists often log it as peer consultation. It’s the same practice under different names.
Supervision requirements for psychologists
The Psychology Board of Australia’s professional competencies build reflection into what it means to practise competently, including professional reflexivity and self-care, working with people from diverse groups, and culturally safe practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
The Board also expects psychologists to do regular peer supervision and reflective practice, and peer consultation is part of the annual CPD requirement.
Requirements change from time to time, so always check the latest version with the Psychology Board of Australia.
Supervision with an experienced psychologist or therapist gives you structured time for exactly this reflection, with records you can use in your CPD portfolio. For culturally safe practice, Lerni’s cultural supervision is delivered by First Nations practitioners.
Supervision requirements for counsellors and psychotherapists
Both the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and PACFA make ongoing supervision a condition of membership and registration. Each sets a minimum amount of supervision you need every year, and rules about who can supervise you.
Requirements change from time to time, so always check the latest version with your association.
Tell us which association you belong to and we’ll match you with a supervisor who meets its requirements. Your supervisor will happily fill in your association’s log forms, so your hours are ready for renewal.

Questions we are asked most
Does Lerni supervision count as peer consultation?
Supervision with another psychologist is one of the ways psychologists meet their peer consultation requirement. Check the Board’s CPD guidelines for what counts in your situation.
How often should I have supervision?
Monthly suits most practitioners. Your association’s minimum and your caseload will guide it. Heavy caseloads, trauma work or a difficult period are reasons to go fortnightly.
Is it confidential?
Yes. What you bring stays between you and your supervisor.
Can I book for myself?
Yes. Most psychologists and counsellors book their own supervision with us.
Looking for a supervisor?
Tell us about your practice and what you need from supervision. We’ll come back within one business day with a match.
