Clinical Supervision with someone who already knows your work
Clinical supervision gives your practitioners a regular, confidential hour with an experienced psychologist or therapist from outside your organisation, to work through cases, risk and the weight of the job. Lerni matches each person with a supervisor who has worked in their sector. Sessions run online anywhere in Australia, or in person in Sydney.
What is clinical supervision?
Clinical supervision is a regular, structured conversation between a practitioner and a trained supervisor about their work with clients. Together they look at cases, decisions, risk, ethics and the effect the work is having on the practitioner, so practice stays safe and the person stays well.
It is not therapy, and it is not performance management. External clinical supervision means the supervisor sits outside your organisation and outside the reporting line, so people can be honest about what is hard.
Who we provide clinical supervision for
In early learning and schools, where the work is not clinical, we call it professional supervision. It’s the same practice under a different name.
- Health professionals: nurses, allied health and private practitioners
- Psychologists, counsellors and psychotherapists: supervision and peer consultation that meets board and association requirements
- Helplines and crisis lines: counsellors, telephone crisis supporters and volunteers
- Social and case workers: child protection, family services, homelessness and community services
- NDIS providers: support coordinators, support workers and team leaders
- Anyone else doing emotionally demanding work
Why organisations bring in external clinical supervision
People don’t raise doubts with their reviewer
When supervision sits with a line manager, the hardest cases often never get mentioned.
It’s the first thing to drop
Senior clinicians are stretched, and internal supervision gets cancelled when the roster is short.
Small teams have nobody to take it to
A sole practitioner or a five-person team has no one internal to test a difficult judgement against.
Risk raised earlier, experienced staff who stay, and a documented record of supervision for audits and registration.
Up and running in three steps
1. We scope it
A 20 minute call to understand who needs supervision and what they’re carrying.
2. We match
On sector and the kind of work, not on who happens to be free.
3. We run it
Scheduling, records and, if you ask, de-identified themes across your workforce. What’s said in a session stays in the session.
Clinical or professional supervision?
They’re essentially the same thing under two names. Health, counselling and social work tend to say “clinical supervision”. Early learning, education and leadership roles tend to say “professional supervision”. Psychologists often log it as peer consultation.
Whatever you call it, it’s regular, confidential time with an experienced practitioner to reflect on your work, keep your practice safe and look after yourself while you do it.
Clinical supervision, answered
What is clinical supervision?
A regular, confidential conversation with a trained supervisor about your work with clients: cases, decisions, risk, ethics and the effect the work is having on you. Lerni provides it with AHPRA-registered psychologists and board-accredited therapists.
What’s the difference between clinical and professional supervision?
Very little. They’re two names for the same practice, and which one you hear mostly depends on your profession. Health, counselling and social work say clinical. Early learning and education say professional.
Is clinical supervision the same as therapy?
No. Therapy is about you as a client. Supervision is about your practice. The supervisor is a psychologist or therapist, but the hour is spent on the work.
How often should it happen?
Monthly, for an hour, suits most practitioners. Teams under heavy load or working through an incident often move to fortnightly for a while.
Is it confidential from my employer?
Yes. Organisations get confirmation that sessions happened and, on request, de-identified themes. They never get the content of a session.
Can I book clinical supervision for myself?
Yes. Individual practitioners can book their own supervision. Sessions are documented, so you can log the hours with your professional association. Check your association’s exact requirements first.
Online or in person?
Online anywhere in Australia. In person in Sydney at our offices in Sutherland. See clinical supervision in Sydney.
Who are your clinical supervisors?
AHPRA-registered psychologists and board-accredited therapists who have trained as supervisors and have worked in the sector they supervise.
